Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty

Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty

The fastest growing surgery in the last five years is undoubtedly ultrasonic rhinoplasty, considered the most advanced bone surgery technique of the nose.

The introduction of the ultrasonic scalpel or ultrasonic rhinoplasty allows us to better control nasal fractures and the postoperative period, thus reducing swelling and haematoma. This results in less swelling and, consequently, a lower risk of haematoma occurring, faster recovery and greater precision in bone fractures and filing.

Ultrasonic rhinoplasty is the most advanced bone surgery technique of the nose. The piezotome emits very specific

Why is ultrasonic rhinoplasty a good option?

ultrasonic energy through mini-saws that only operate on hard, not soft, structures. Hence, the ultrasound does not burn or injure the skin, but works deeper into the bone, avoiding damage to nearby tissues. In addition, the piezotome only operates at the level of the nasal bones, never on the cartilage.

Postoperative period

In rhinoplasty, the most aggressive moment is the fracture of the nasal bones, also known as an osteotomy. Unlike conventional rhinoplasty using chisels and hammers, ultrasonic rhinoplasty has the advantage of being much more accurate as the bones are cut with a “pen”. It has its origins in brain surgery, as the bones of the skull can be cut without damaging the brain. Bones are not broken but cut, thus avoiding damaging soft tissues and blood vessels

What are the differences between ultrasonic rhinoplasty and traditional rhinoplasty?

The main difference is precision. In ultrasonic rhinoplasty we have total control over the amount of bone we file and the place where we cut it. When we perform a rhinoplasty, we first have to “file” any excess bone and for this, diamond files were previously used which, although accurate, damaged the nasal dorsum cartilage and could generate irregularities.

Now, by means of the specific nasal dorsum terminal of the piezotome, we only file the bony dorsum, without damaging the cartilage, performing this micron by micron, thus resulting in absolute precision.

In contrast with conventional rhinoplasty, where bones are broken using a chisel, a less accurate technique, the piezotome allows us to cut the bone exactly where we want to.
